Maslenitsa 91

Welcome to our annual folklore art project celebrating Maslenitsa, a vibrant Slavic folk holiday akin to Mardi Gras. Since 2018, this community-driven initiative at School No. 91 in Moscow has brought together children, parents, and teachers to create giant puppets inspired by world-wide street festivals. Each year’s festivities culminate in a spectacular street show portraying the timeless victory of Spring over Winter.

This project uniquely blends tradition, artistic expression, and cultural dialogue to engage audiences locally and beyond. It educates participants on folklore culture while fostering creativity, collaboration, and community spirit.

About the Project

Our project grew out of community workshops at a local school, where generations come together to create giant puppets, design costumes, and explore folklore traditions. Maslenitsa, a joyful Slavic festival marking the transition from winter to spring, is celebrated with songs, games, and symbolic performances.

The giant puppets, inspired by the spirit of Mardi Gras, bring these tales vividly to life. The annual street performance celebrates the triumph of good over evil, as Spring defeats Winter. In 2022, we reimagined this story to promote peaceful conflict resolution, echoing a shared hope for global harmony.
